Scripture

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
— John 16:33 (NIV)

Reflection

I’ve always really enjoyed reading about the Armour of God. When I was younger I used to love watching the battle scenes in movies, even to this day I love watching the Marvel movies and their action set pieces. When we talk about the armour of God it always makes me think about a huge movie battle scene. I just think they look awesome, but I’ll be honest, the shoes are not the bit that draws my attention. Today we are going to reflect a bit about why we should be putting the peace that comes from the good news on our feet to go into battle every day.

Shoes are important, like really important. We all feel cool when we have a new pair of shoes (well I do…) but think about their practical applications for a moment. Our shoes stop all the dirt from the floor getting to our feet and it stops anything sharp getting to them and hurting us. So practically shoes are important. But what about back then in battle? Well actually shoes were even more important in battle, when they used to be in battle and would hit swords against each other bits of metal could often come off and if something were to happen to a soldier's foot they would then have problems attacking as well as they wouldn’t be able to get as much force into their swings due to them not being able to transfer their weight properly. So I guess what I’m trying to say here is that shoes were important then, and they still have practical help today to keep our feet safe.

We are told to put on the armour of God every day, which includes the shoes.

I think it’s amazing that we’re told to put the peace that comes from the good news on our feet. This is what we stand on, the good news of Jesus. He’s already won and we know that means when we go into times of “battle” we already have the victory through Jesus’ victory. I know that sometimes things get hard, we have challenges that we feel no one else truly understands and I’m not saying this lightly as I still feel it as well. But the great news is that we can hand those things over to Jesus as He wants to help you see the victory that He’s claimed in your circumstances. The peace that we clothe our feet in is the peace of knowing the good news.

Challenge

So it’s great that our feet are clothed in the peace of the good news. But how do we know this good news? How do we become more reassured of this? When I’m feeling anxious about my situation or dreading what tomorrow will bring, what do I do then?

Today’s challenge is a hard one, but I would really encourage you to do it as it may help you a lot. I want to encourage you to write down the things that you are struggling with. After you have written them down I want you to pray about them, take them before God and give them to Him. Tell Him how you honestly feel about them, if they make you sad let Him know. If they make you scared, let Him know. Anxious, doubting yourself, paranoid or fearful, whatever it may be, take them to Him. Once you’ve done this, rip the paper or dispose of the paper any way you feel is best and continue seeking God, trusting He has everything under control.
