Scripture

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place
— Ephesians 6:14 (NIV)

Reflection

The breastplate of righteousness - Why all this armour? Who are we fighting I hear you ask? Well, that’s a blast for another day! =] Let’s focus on the breastplate of righteousness. First of all, a breastplate is a piece of armour that protects and covers the chest and upper body. And here, Paul is telling us to wear a breastplate of righteousness. Where do we get one from? Church? Supermarket?

Righteousness is all about living right and being right with God by living how He wants you to live and doing the things that bring Him joy. Because Jesus was crucified on the cross for you and by you choosing to love Jesus, you are righteous, even when you sin. So by wearing the breastplate of righteousness, Paul is saying that when you live right in God's eyes, your obedience gives you protection, a breastplate of righteousness, which protects your heart, not only physically spiritually also.

Challenge

Think of how your right standing on God protects not just you but those around you, and let that encourage you to be even more righteous so that your protection can be inspiring to those around you who don’t have that protection from God. Think more about why God wants us to wear all these protective things?
