Scripture

Seek God, all you quietly disciplined people
who live by God’s justice.
Seek God’s right ways. Seek a quiet and disciplined life.
Perhaps you’ll be hidden on the Day of God’s anger.
— Zephaniah 2:3 (MSG)

Reflection

Zephaniah’s book was designed as a message for the people of Jerusalem. The king of Jerusalem had attempted to restore the kingdom and turn their attention back towards God. However, despite his efforts, the people were too stuck in their ways and continuously resorted back to their own idols. During this time Zephaniah prophesised to the people warning them that their actions would result in grave destruction of Jerusalem. Despite the warnings, the people of Jerusalem refused to change.

In chapter 1, Zephaniah warns the citizens of God’s anger and a comparison is made with the book of Genesis, suggesting God’s reversal of the good things He gave to man. Specifically, in 1:3, God eludes that all the creatures He put on the earth for man’s enjoyment have been abuse and, therefore, despite God’s grievance at destroying them, declares that absolute annihilation is necessary to restore man to God.

So, what can we gain from the first part of Zephaniah? It seems pretty bleak and yet it is not without hope! From what the Bible tells us we know that God is a jealous God (Nahum 1:2 – see Joe’s reflection) but also just. He does not seek to punish but, instead, seeks to heal. Therefore, in 2:1-3, Zephaniah offers us (like the people of Jerusalem) a chance to redeem ourselves by seeking God and building a relationship with Him so that we too can “be hidden on the Day of God’s anger” (2:3).

Challenge

Now, more than ever, is the time to build your relationship with God. I don’t know at what point you are at in your relationship with Him, but it is never too late to turn to God again and ask for help, forgiveness, guidance, and strength.

Try to experiment with different ways of connecting with God. I find I particularly connect with Him when listening to soothing worship music or taking some time out by myself in the garden. Whatever your way, today is the day!
