Friday 12th September

Church: Ambassadors of the King

Reflection:

1 Peter 2:9-12:

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Spend time meditating on this Scripture, the amazing nature of our calling and identity as a people and how we are to live out that calling and identity. Look for how we outwork our calling through our identity, words and actions.

Prayers:

Now use this Psalm in your praying:

  • Give thanks to God for the way that he is brought you into his people and set his affection upon you

  • Pray for City Church that we may realise the immensity of who God has called us to be together and to live it out with purity

  • Pray for City Church people who experience unfair challenges may bear them well and God be shown in them

  • Pray for the church in Worcester to be used mightily in a visitation of God, touching children, university students, the lonely, families and the elderly

Listen:

Spend time listening to God for yourself and for City Church.

  • What aspect of God’s calling do you need a fresh appreciation of – being part of a chosen people, a royal priesthood or a holy nation?

  • How do you think God wants you to respond to this Scripture?

  • How can City Church join its being, speaking and doing of mission together in the City of Worcester?

  • How can City Church be in the world but not of the world?

Write down what God gives you!

Praise:

Praise God for all the testimonies you know of how his church is living the good news before a watching world.
